Missouri's Deer Hunters

The MDC Deer Program surveys deer hunters to gauge public opinion regarding deer numbers and management strategies and for indicators of deer population trends in each county. We greatly appreciate the responses we receive which help make our surveys an effective management tool!

MOFEP

The Missouri Ozark Forest Ecosystem Project (MOFEP) is a long-term, landscape-level experiment measuring the living (i.e. birds, plants, trees) and non-living (i.e. soil, water, weather) parts of a forested ecosystem. MOFEP provides science-based information to forest managers so they may employ management practices that ensure healthy and sustainable forest, fish and wildlife resources while also providing opportunities to all citizens to use, enjoy and learn about their forest resource.

Pan Fish Versus Predator Fish

Small impoundments provide close-to-home fishing opportunities for many Missourians, but many do not produce quality sport fisheries for one or more species. In particular, many small lakes contain populations of slow-growing bluegills and crappies that are stunted in growth. The presence of gizzard shad and common carp are known to negatively influence the pan fish populations.

Population Genetics of Walleye

Walleye management is focused on preservation, countering the negative effects of impoundments, and providing angling opportunities. New information has emerged regarding the genetic structure of walleye using microsatellite makers and mitochondrial DNA.

Secretive Marsh Bird Research

Secretive Marsh Birds (SMBs) are a group of wetland birds including rails, bitterns and moorhens. They get their name because the dense vegetation they live in and their coloration make them very hard to detect in the wild.
