Paper Summary/Abstract:
In the spring and early summer of 2021, the Missouri Department of Conservation interviewed mill owner/operators from a random-sample of primary wood processors throughout the state, asking for information on their firms from 2021. In this report we present forest industry trends, harvest levels and other details. Such detailed information is necessary for intelligent planning and decision making in wood procurement, forest resources management, and forest industry development. Likewise, researchers need current forest industry and industrial roundwood information for planning projects. In 2021, Missouri’s primary wood using industry was comprised of 296 sawmills, 2 cooperage mills, 4 post and pole mills, 4 charcoal plants, 5 log brokers, and 14 mills producing other products. In 2021, the primary wood-using mills in Missouri processed about 704,000 MBF of industrial roundwood, about 42,000 MBF less than processed in 2018.
