Effects of Wetland Management Strategies on Habitat Use of Autumn Migrating Rails on Intensively-Managed Wetland Complexes in Missouri

Autumn is a critical time for rails migrating through Missouri as the birds need sufficient habitat available to replenish energy reserves expended through migration. Objectives for this portion of the project were to: 1) Identify habitat characteristics of locations used by sora, Virginia rails, and King rails in the fall on four wetland complexes in Missouri, 2) estimate sora, Virginia rail, and King rail occupancy rates and abundance response to water level management and wetland habitat management regimes during fall migration, and 3) determine timing, location, and sample size necessary to conduct a telemetry study to evaluate survival during fall migration.
